[boomtown & world basics] [always under construction] Notable Locations in BoomTown: [if you have something you'd like to suggest, please comment to this post.]
THE HUB(S): Every major city world wide has a Hub for superhero/villain use, the largest of which is located in Boomtown itself. Doors to all linked cities are available for fast and easy transport, and clearance is granted to even the Average Joe With Superpowers. There is one catch: technology developed by the world's most famous superscientist negates all non-essential super activity within the walls of The Hubs themselves, so no epic battles of good versus evil here. This is neutral territory, folks! Most Hubs (but especially the more popular and well-maintained ones) also contain a variety of shops, restaurants, bars, and other entertainments depending on the city for hero/villain use. All of this is designed as a sort of retreat from the public eye.
THE HERO COMPLEX & THE VILLA: There is only one Hero Complex, and there is only one Villa; both are located in Boomtown proper. In both places, it is what's below ground that's most important -- computer databases, blinky lights and all that jazz. The central intelligence epicenters. On the upper floors one can expect to find the Sidekick Agency, the offices of Supersuit designers, and various flashboards announcing the news and any reported disturbances that might require heroic attention. There are rooms available for overnight stays. The defining difference between The Hero Complex and The Villa? The Hero Complex is for heroes, and the Villa is for Villains.
The Hero Complex, The Villa, and all the Hubs around the world are strictly off-limits to the Press.
NOTABLE DISTRICTS AND LOCATIONS
Downtown:
FRANK LEE UNIVERSITY: College, only for heroes! Professors teach their students how to master the art of their ability, hone it into something they can use to fight crime and then they hope for the best. Just because their intentions are to help their students learn how to fight crime doesn't mean that's what will happen, of course. There will always be villains; if there weren't, then what would be the point of having so many heroes? Oh, and of course there's the mandatory partying, getting wasted and waking up with Showtunes Boy in your bed the next morning.
LARSON PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL: English, geology, history, algebra, ability control.. these are the things students learn here in LHS. Just like every other high school, only with a twist. Not that big of a twist, of course, as it's the norm around BoomTown to learn how to fly or how to control the pop of your claws - and just the same as any other normal high school class, the students groan when they're given homework for Hero History.
MOONGLADE DINER: Located between Frank Lee University and Larson High, the Moonglade Diner is a casual restaurant with decent food for great prices. Definitely not the ideal date location for most couples but perfect for people to meet up and hang out. It's open 24-hours a day, and draws in those hungry students who need somewhere to eat before heading back to campus or back home.
BORK: One of the schmanciest restaurants in BoomTown! This is where many of the high society crew dine, especially on the weekends. They have a five-star Swedish chef heading the kitchen and though most people can't understand a word he's saying, he helps in the preparation of a great many fancy (and tasty) dishes.
CHARLIE'S BAKERY: Located right at the edge of downtown BoomTown, Charlie's is a small, independently-owned coffeehouse with delusions of having enough of a pastry selection to be considered a real bakery. Discount for students, and for faculty, open 6am-10pm.
JOSEPH'S: An upper-scale Italian restaurant, located in downtown BoomTown. A full menu of Italian favorites and fusion cuisine, at prices ranging anywhere from $15 and up. A full wine list, and bar are available, opening at 5 pm each evening.
THE FOUR LEAF CLOVER: A famous Boom Town casino owned by Doyle Cavanaugh [happydaz], and no! He hasn't and never will hire people to dress the place to theme.
ST. AUGUSTINE HOSPITAL: A large hospital located in the downtown area, nestled right between the industrial and residential areas of the city. Doctors on call every day and night, for those injuries or illnesses too serious for Ferguson, or a trip to the ER.
Edgewater:
ANTIQUITY PIER: A good place for a day of fun with the family or a romantic, casual date. The Pier is home to a bustling amusement park (free admission, but rides and games cost tickets sold from a booth near you!). Pizza, hot dogs, ice cream, and many other treats are sold by boardwalk vendors so there's no need to go hungry.
BODY SHOTS: A gentleman's club. Please have I.D. ready at the door.
THE DOCKS: Many different varieties of goods are imported and exported through the docks and quite a bit of shady business also takes place.
HERO'S GYROS: A great place to sit down, have a gyro, maybe a basket of fries and talk about your busy day of kicking ass and chewing bubblegum.
BANG POW GYM & BOXING RING: This would be the place to go if you're looking for high quality and affordable time at the gym. They sell memberships or give you one flat rate per a visit. Their boxing ring tends to fall under the shadows at night, however - bareknuckle boxing matches take place after hours without the boss knowing what the heck's going on in his own place.
FERGUSON MEDICAL CLINIC: A small medical practice, home to 15 doctors, ranging from pediatricians to specialists. For any medical issues not serious enough for the hospital, Ferguson is the place to go. An Urgent Care practice is open every day until 8 pm, for quick care for lesser emergencies.
KALI'S: Not far from the river's edge, Kali's is a smoky dive bar that serves as a place for those who consider themselves baddies to have a few drinks. Just don't get out of hand.
Old Town:
STANDING OVATIONS: Enjoy live entertainment in an intimate setting, from comedy troupes to jazz bands and more. If you're a performer, come down for Open Mic night every wednesday and let Boom Town discover your talents.
BOOM TOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY [MAIN BRANCH]: Free membership since 1887! The Library is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday - Saturday and closed on Sundays. There are thousands of free or low fee classes and learning experience for children and adults alike.
THE CULTURE CLUB: Strip Club! Or, if we want to get all technical about it, an exotic dancer's club. Hey, every city needs at least one, right? Heroes are not above strip clubs, ladies and gentlemen. For every one hero or villain who snubs a lapdance there are five more who are just waiting in line for one. Heck, there are some who even work here for a little extra cash! Watch as the tabloids drool over the mere idea.
THE WINCHESTER: A low key and comfortable place to drink a few brews before heading home for the night. But don't start any trouble, friends - the owner has a shotgun behind the counter and he's not afraid to threaten you with it.
THE ONYX THEATRE: This theatre is painted and sculpted to look like an outdoor theatre only indoors, all the way up to the ceiling where there are tiny, twinkling lights to give off the impression that you're under a blanket of stars.
The Hills:
CHEZ VOUS: A busy date spot for the wealthy crowd, and also popular for high-profile business dinners, this fancy french restaurant starts entrées at $100 and up.
FROHMAN'S BAR & GRILL: With a laid back cookout atmosphere, Frohman's is one of the finest places to go in Boom Town for barbeque. Try the sausage!
BUFFALO BILL'S: A unique place to sit down, eat and have a few drinks. Buffalo Bill's is a dine-in wild west show with a menu that features entrees such as chicken-fried steak and prime rib.
WORTHINGTON ACADEMY: Only the best of the best go to this school, or at least the people who have enough money to pay tuition every semester.
BRENTWOOD MULTIPLEX: The local movie theater, boasting fourteen screens and all the newest films, from Hollywood blockbusters to the occasional art house independent film. Every weekend special midnight movies are shown, along with themed promotions.
Beaumont:
MANCALA HOUR: A spot for the intellectual drinker, Mancala Hour is a festive and colorful environment.
POSER: This building was once a bank, now transformed into a punk club. Bands of that genre play here regularly.
LASKEY SHOPPING CENTER: A large, two-story mall, home to an extensive selection of stores, from small privately-owned stalls to chain outlets, and an expansive food court. A familiar hang out for young people, particularly on the weekends.
SILVER SANDS APARTMENTS: A moderately large housing complex nestled just outside the residential sector of town, offering both one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, each with bathroom and kitchen facilities on site. Reasonable rent for those seeking a place to live that's not as expensive as the Hero Complex.
MEYER'S DELI: A small, quick-serving deli restaurant, located a block and a half from Frank Lee campus. A favorite lunch spot for students and teachers alike, Meyer's has a nice menu of familiar favorites, specializing in sub sandwiches and salads, quick and inexpensive.
The Village:
THE GOOD DOC'S: A bar on a backstreet with a bright neon sign, most people just refer to it as Doc's. This is a small place where people with abilities (specifically heroes; villains are frowned upon) are allowed to kick back and relax with no worries. Doc himself is an empath.
WOOLOOLOO HISTORICAL MUSEUM: Come meet the dinosaurs! Along with many other ancient artifacts, exhibits and other historical goodness.
MILLER SQUARE PARK: For those who can't get out of the city very often, Miller Square is the place to go on a sunny weekend. There are all kinds of tables for barbeques, pits for volleyball, and wending paths for those pesky skateboarding kids. Flowers and trees abound, and on a warm spring day you're guaranteed some sunbathing college kids. Dogs are welcome, so be careful where you step.
STARLIGHT DRIVE-IN: This drive-in has been owned and operated by the same family for over fifty years, and it's still located several dozen miles outside of the city limits in a little suburb known as Duskwood. There are four screens and they all show double features on the weekends through out the year (weather permitting) but during the late spring and summer months, they have showtimes every night.
LUNACY: A dance club and bar located off the main road, nestled in the more industrialized area of town. Once an old meatpacking factory, it's been converted into a club, loud dance music mixing with the occasional live band or performer. Nightly drink specials begin at 8, and theme nights every month.
THE TILT: A small arcade located in a strip mall just off the main road. Most of the games are several years old, but they're in great working condition, and still manage to be a big draw. Open every day until 9 pm; a usual hang out for the younger crowd, particularly middle-school age.
SHERWOOD FLORIST: A small little place sandwiched between two other stores. It's owned by an older hippie man. Will be expanding over the next few years.
Other Locations:
KIRKBRIDE MAXIMUM SECURITY PENITENTIARY: Home for the criminally insane! Constructed on a man-made island right off the coast, this unit specifies in keeping the baddest of super villains in lock down.
Suburbs: Duskwood, Lakeview, Maple Hill, Cherrywood, Miller Groves, Feathermoon, Auberdine, Tarren Mill
Transportation Public transportation is how many people get around in the city, using the busses and the subway where the people that live out in the suburbs also have to catch the train to get to and from work during the week. With all modes combined one can get nearly anywhere they want to go just by checking the routes. The interstate also winds through the city and there are just as many ways to get around if you choose to drive, though in some areas parking can be a difficult task.
Sports Teams
HOCKEY: The Knights. Home games are played Camelot Ice Arena. Their mascot is Whitey the Knight. Placed in good standing, they usually make it to the finals, but rarely bring anything home.
FOOTBALL: The Mariners. Home Games are played at Mariner Stadium. Their mascot is an OLD SCHOOL sailor. Placed in poor standing. Crap, crap, crap. Woe betide the football fan of Boom Town.
BASEBALL: The Vikings. Home games are played at Davenport Park. Their mascot is.... a viking. With blonde pigtails. :D Placed in moderate standing. You're liable to see a good few games over the season, but nothing miraculous.
Notable Locations the World Over:
Las Vegas:
THE BLARNEY STONE: A well-to-do brothel nestled somewhere in the quieter districts of Las Vegas. Owned by Doyle Cavanaugh [happydaz].
